KTBA Updates Music Library at Rahway High School

RAHWAY, NJ – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation was able to donate new music literature to the music program at Rahway High School in Rahway, New Jersey! Every music program needs variety in their repertoire to keep students engaged. The musical compositions give students a real-life, applicable opportunity to exercise different technical aspects of their playing. They also expose students to new composers and musical styles. However, it can be difficult to keep up with purchasing new compositions on such small or non-existent budgets for music programs. Fortunately, it only takes one ambitious and passionate music teacher to to bring music to life for those students. The Music Teacher at Rahway High School, Mr. Robert Van Wyk tells us more about his particular music classroom: “My students create a family at our school. We are a performing arts family (bands, choirs, strings, theatre, and dance) that support each other on the stage, in the classroom, and beyond. We are a NJ high school, just outside NYC, servicing a multicultural population of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. We strongly believe that the arts can instill positive change, transform, inspire, and change lives.” At Rahway High School, the music program serves as a powerful unifying activity for the students of the school. “We are going to build this program over a strong foundation and proud history and generations of art students,” Mr. Van Wyk explains. “My students are extremely motivated. They are eager and love creating music together. As a department, nine of our seniors have gone on to major in music/performance/musical theatre over the past two years. This collection of music books [would] provide much-needed resources for our classroom library as our students prepare for auditions and develop into achieving, well-rounded performers. These tools [would] support our mission to increase student achievement, spread the importance of arts education in our community, and highlight our student performers as the diverse and dynamic young people that they are.” Thanks to the generous donations from music lovers and Blues fans, KTBA was able to complete the fundraising for Mr. Van Wyk’s music library project. Mr. Van Wyk expresses his gratitude: Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., Thank you so much for providing these books for our students. It will be an awesome resource as we continue to grow through this school year and beyond. We are so appreciative of your generosity and kindness towards our Rahway kids. Please follow us @wearerahwayarts so that you can see these tools in action. Thank you! With gratitude, Mr. Van Wyk   Stay tuned for our next Donation of the Week coming up on Friday December 10th, 2021! KTBA Donates New Drum Hardware to Percussion Program

VINELAND, NJ – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated brand new drum hardware and supplies to the percussion program at Vineland High School! “My high school students were curious and eager to learn about the many instruments in the percussion family,” Mr. Eric Sikorski explained. “Students enrolled in a variety of courses, such as concert ensemble and percussion classes, used this equipment [however] many students were unable to use the equipment due to disrepair, size discrepancies, and not enough of it to go around. This made engaging everyone difficult, if not impossible at times. Without enough working/correctly sized instruments to go around, students were not able to participate fully. Working in a percussion ensemble without enough instruments made it very difficult!” By obtaining more equipment and repairing existing instruments, Mr. Sikorski would be able to involve more students in a collaborative environment. “My goal was to ensure that each student in my class had a working, actual instrument to play on every day! While not the most exciting materials, these were necessary for both our band rehearsals and numerous percussion classes. Instruments were too small and/or are in need of repair; we also needed a few more instruments to ensure all students could participate in percussion ensemble music,” he adds. “I have seniors using snare drums that can only go high enough for a 10-year-old! Both sets of bongos have broken heads and our marimba has only half of the bars that are able to function. When playing as an entire class for percussion ensemble, there are not enough instruments to cover all of the parts. This causes some students to not be able to participate. My goal is to get every student in the class playing and sharing in the experience of making music together. Those are the times when the most learning happens, with everyone actively participating and working together.” Thanks to the generosity of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like you, Keeping the Blues Alive funded Mr. Sikorski’s project! He expresses his gratitude: Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., I sincerely thank you for your generous donation. My students and I are greatly appreciative of your generosity. The materials you have helped provide will positively impact students for many years to come. It will allow me to fix and upgrade equipment to allow a more collaborative working environment; while continuing to foster a love of music! With gratitude, Mr. Eric Sikorski Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation is a 501c3 organization that makes a donation to a school in need of music instruments, supplies, sheet music, and more every week! KTBA Donates Ukuleles to Elementary Music Program

FARMINGDALE, NJ – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation purchased twelve (12) brand new ukuleles for the music students at Ardena Elementary School! “Our school has a rich history stemming over 80 years of raising smart, funny, kind & caring leaders,” Mrs. Hardy-Wiessel explains.  “As a Title I school with an ESL population, many of our students struggle financially, as well as, with a language barrier. I’ve been privileged to watch them learn and grow, as music is a universal language. All students, regardless of ability, work hard to learn and grow in the music classroom.” According to Mrs. Wiessel, when it comes to leadership these students are fearless! “Students take the reigns to help each other when they are struggling and lift each other up in celebration when they meet their goals. Kids are born music makers. Our students don’t have the opportunity to see string instruments in school, let alone play them. Having access to ukuleles will give our students a chance to play them in the general music classroom. This opportunity will provide them with a unique way to learn music concepts that they have never done before. Not only will they build their self-esteem by playing an instrument, but they will also build a sense of community,” she adds. Click here for NAfME’s Beginner’s Guide for the Music Classroom (URL: https://nafme.org/ukulele-101-beginners-guide-ukulele-elementary-general-music-classroom/) “Students will have the opportunity to set achievable goals, practice the skills required to meet those goals, listen to one another and themselves to give honest critique in a kind way, and work together to make beautiful music!” Although ukuleles are small, their impact is a huge step for everyone involved. Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive was able to fund Mrs. Wiessel’s project, and the ukuleles will arrive within a week! Mrs. Wiessel expresses her gratitude: Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., Thank you so very much for your generosity! My students will be thrilled beyond words to receive these wonderful instruments. I will joyfully prepare all summer to implement and highlight these instruments within our entire K-12 program. We have been greatly blessed by your gift. I can hardly wait to share your gift and in return share the pictures and cards from the students to you showing the tremendous impact this will have on our program. What a BLESSING!!! THANK YOU!!!!! Donation of the Week

Giving The Gift of Music neptune, nj – Thanks to your donations this week, 125 elementary school music students will be able to play a full concert of music using new instruments purchased by previous campaigns.  The sheet music the students will receive from this week’s campaign will stretch their musical abilities, and challenge them to keep practicing! Mr. Palmer, the school’s band director, expressed that his 3rd through 5th grade students live in a high poverty area of New Jersey. Over the past few years, he has been steadily acquiring new instruments for these students through Donors Choose.org.  Another advantage to this new music is the fact that it will last for future graduating classes as well.  Not only will this year’s students benefit from the lessons and techniques learned through the music and instruction but they will pass it on to the next year’s students and so on. The majority of the music is a Grade 1 or 1.5 level of skill. There are six (6) levels which vary by the publisher.  There are a handful of music publishers that own a majority of band music, so although there will be slight discrepancies amongst grade levels, it is hardly enough to worry about.  Grade one is considered the Beginner level which is primarily reserved for first and second year players.  This level is ideal for Mr. Palmer’s students and we felt that his attainable goals for the students will serve them all amicably. Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Thank you so much for your donation to my school band program. What would the band do with out music. I guess we would just keep time. The music the we will receive thanks to you will be put into our music library. The students will get a chance to learn how to play these songs. These songs will be used for years to come. This gift will benefit countless students over the years. The band and school community is very excited that you have helped us get new music. Thank you so much!!!! With gratitude, Mr. Palmer We funded this project because we understand how important it is for these students to have the materials they need to succeed in the music classroom. With budget cuts being such a dismal reality for many schools from year to year, we wanted to provide the best learning opportunity for the students at Midtown Community Elementary School. Thank you to everyone who participated! If you would like to help us fund next week’s project, click here to make a donation!
