KTBA Donates Bongos for “Invincible Warrior” Performance

Middle School Students in Montgomery Hit That Beat! MONTGOMERY, AL – Thanks to the donations from supporters like you, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated brand new Aspire Oak Congos to the music students at McKee Middle School in Montgomery, Alabama! About the Students According to Mrs. Phillips, “the McKee Middle 6-8 band room is a safe place. It is almost separate from the school because it becomes a safe haven for its students to come and feel at home. We use music as a relationship builder in our band room. The students and parents look forward to entering our room to see what good it is we are coming up with at the time. Our program has been superior-rated for the last five years because we work hard and we stay focused on the task at hand.” That task is to excel, to compete, and ultimately WIN! “Once they enter my classroom they know it is a safe place but also a very serious place where we learn to be competitive and rise above the competition,” Mrs. Phillips says. Under her leadership, Mrs. Phillips has had students who have won the Alabama State Spelling Bee Competition, the state Hear Our Voices competition, multiple Beta Club competitions, and have been accepted to various District Honor Bands. About the Teacher and their School “Our band is a breath of fresh air to our school building,” she says. “Our school mainly focuses on athletics so we do our part to receive just as much publicity. We perform anywhere we get a chance.” Mrs. Phillips has been a fierce advocate for music education projects at her school and has been crowdfunding for at least the past 4 years. Nearly all students come from low-income households which makes this gift even more uplifting to those students and families. Approximately 95% of students receive free or reduced price lunches and the school receives significantly less state and local support than similar districts with less diverse student populations. About the Project Approximately 100 students will be affected by this project, placing it in the upper tiers of our impactful donations. The bongos will be used for the performance of The Invincible Warrior. “The Invincible Warrior is a piece we are playing for our Music Performance Assessment [or MPA’s],” Mrs. Phillips explains. “Full of energy and lively percussion, the students are excited to play it. We have all the parts covered except the Bongos. I have one scholar playing the part and the scholar has been practicing on drum pads until we get a set of Bongos. It is important that we have all the proper instruments for the pieces so the adjudicators can be impressed with our group. Superiors [top ratings/marks at MPA’s] are what we are seeking! Help us get them!” Attitude of Gratitude Thanks to the support of music lovers and donors like you, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation was able to fund Mrs. Phillips’ project and the bongos were delivered to the school promptly! She expresses her gratitude: Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., Thank you for finding our project so quickly! We will have these in time for our assessments! We are so thankful for your generosity and thoughtfulness to our program. Our students have been practicing very hard and are very motivated to do a great job. McKee has not competed in many years so I am hoping to go and prove that we are a different band. Thank you!! With gratitude, Mrs. Phillips Affiliates In addition to KTBA funds, Mrs. Phillips also received additional support from the Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF). KTBA Donates Marching Equipment to Cullman Middle School

CULLMAN, AL – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated marching equipment to the middle school students at Cullman Middle School! “My students are energetic, driven, and team oriented,” Mr. Teuscher says. Teuscher teaches music at Cullman. “My middle school marching band has about 100 students with about 20 students in the percussion section. We field a full marching drumline made up of primarily 7th and 8th graders. Each summer and fall, we learn a halftime production and parade music to play for our community every week throughout the season.” His students love performing and playing music together. Each musician has a unique and important role in the instrumentation of the band. Additionally, many students are involved in various athletic programs  and clubs making them very well-rounded students. “Most school drumlines have 10-12 students,” Mr. Teuscher says. “Our middle school drumline for the 2019-2020 school year has 18 students in grades 7 and 8! I am always ready to instruct the students and get them ready for performing in the fall, but we are short on percussion equipment! I believe that every student in the band needs to have fun and contribute to the music with their instrument. I would love to create a new section of percussionists for next fall with some new equipment and some unique sounds. This would allow each student to participate fully, even with our growth!” Thanks to the donations of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like YOU, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation was able to donate brand new percussion equipment that will allow Cullman Middle School to field more drummers on the field! Cymbals, clamps, and supplies will help strengthen the confidence of the program from Mr. Teuscher and administration, down to the newest musician! Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation is a 501c3 organization that makes a donation to a school in need of music instruments, supplies, sheet music, and more every week! Your donation helps us to keep music in schools, while preserving blues heritage. Without your support, we would not be able to reach as many students around the country. We are grateful for your generosity.  To date, KTBA has reached over 63,000 students by sponsoring 400 various music projects! The journey has been incredible! Singing and Dancing with Dr. Jean

Lanett, AL – This week, Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation reached out to an elementary school in Alabama to aid in their goal of incorporating music and dance into their early education curriculum! Mrs. Burrow’s, the kindergarten teacher at the school is a believer of getting these kids off their seats, out of their desks, and using music as a positive influence in the students lives.  She explains: “I teach a fantastic group of Kindergarten students.  We live in a small community and I teach in a city school system. Our small class sizes are great to provide our students with one-on-one learning experiences.  We have students from all backgrounds which makes our diverse classroom a great community of learners!  Many students in my classroom live in homes where they are loved but their basic needs are a struggle to meet.  I see the love in their eyes everyday and they are eager to learn something new.” As a follower and supporter of Keeping The Blues Alive, you know that we strive to support early music education.  It is no surprise that we were delighted to donate our resources so that Mrs. Burrows could purchase a special gift for those kids.  We supplied her school with a music and dance CD set.  The students will learn life skills, numbers, and even have some silly songs too! The CDs were produced by Dr. Jean Feldman, renowned author and music educator from Georgia.  She earned a B.A. from the University of Georgia, a D.A.S.T. from Emory University, and both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia State University.  For over 40 years, Dr. Jean has been a clinician and educator, inspiring teachers and parents all over the country with her unique approach to early education. These supplementary materials will help engage her young students and we are very happy to be able to assist her in that goal. Thank you for your donations this week, and we hope that you will continue support Keeping The Blues Alive as we outfit teachers all over the country with the tools they need to educate and inspire our children through the arts.
