KTBA Donates Percussion Mallets to Elementary School

Percussion Mallets Donated to Elementary Students INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated percussion mallets to the students at Avondale Meadows Academy in Indianapolis, IN. About the Students “The students I have the unique honor to teach are from very low socio-economic backgrounds,” states Mrs. Patterson, the music instructor at Avondale. “Our school is located in an urban setting and the majority of our students reside in and out of broken homes. They’re hardened by their level of adult-problem reality. The school is the students’ only structured environment. The Admin and Staff work effectively to make school their safe place to learn, grow, and have fun together.” Mrs. Patterson’s students love moving, playing, and creating music; “I’m their music teacher, and they need decent instruments and MALLETS to make it all happen, bringing smiles to their faces while mastering the concepts and skills of the state and national general music curriculum (the bonus),” she says. Their instruments are old and broken, and in meager supply. “Their smiles make my corner of the world a better place and my reason for being their teacher. Positive, fun music experiences, given their circumstances is a must, a need, and a want…hope…for the students’ sakes alone.” About the Project The project’s focus is teamwork, performing in one ensemble, and before the students had little to no opportunity such as this in their music classroom. Students will learn mallet-playing techniques, skills noticeably improving alongside their classmates. They’ll be playing, improvising, accompanying and creating their own music, which equals major smiles galore! Thanks to the donations from music lovers like YOU, KTBA was able to contribute to this project and send the mallets to the school promptly. KTBA Donates Saxophone to Elementary Music Program

RISING SUN, IN – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated a brand new Student Model Prelude by Conn-Slemer Alto Saxophone to the music program at Switzerland County Elementary School! “Our school is the larger of the two elementary schools in our district with an average of about 485-500 students,” Ms. Gasser says. Ms. Rachael Gasser teaches music at SCES.   “Our 5th and 6th-grade bands have more than doubled the past three years with up to 63 members strong. We are a struggling and low socioeconomic status school and community with 59% of our students eligible for free or reduced lunch,” she says.  “A majority of our students and families are not able to rent a band instrument from a music store and therefore rely on playing school-owned instruments.” Due to the increasing student numbers, the instrument inventory at Switzerland County Elementary is in desperate need of more instruments of higher quality and durability. “Our band students perform twice a year for our community as well as on a monthly basis for our school in our Character Counts parades. My students are still excited about band and need more instruments and supplies.” Ms. Gasser tells us more about their needs. “This saxophone will be used by a variety of students in financial need for many years at our school. With such an increase in student numbers, we need your help to increase our school instruments. With 59% of our school on free and reduced lunch, our average family can not afford to rent or buy a band instrument from a music store. Therefore, we provide school-owned instruments for those students. Every saxophone in our entire district has been played by various students in financial need for the past three years and we need more. I will never turn away a student from band because they can not afford to rent or buy an instrument. It is my educational responsibility to offer and provide quality band instruction to all students no matter their financial situation. Please help us increase our instrument inventory with quality instruments for our beginning band students.” Thanks to the generosity of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like you, Keeping the Blues Alive purchased this saxophone for Ms. Gasser’s classroom. Ms. Gasser expresses her gratitude: Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc., Your generosity is astounding and I am so excited to share this amazing news and new instrument with my students! Our band program will benefit so much for years and years to come from this quality saxophone. Thank you for helping keep music education alive and well in our school and community. Mending Muncie, Indiana: Dozens of Instruments Repaired by KTBA Funding

This week’s success story comes from Indianapolis, Indiana where 134 middle school band students are now waiting anxiously for the return of their newly repaired music instruments. Keeping The Blues Alive: Mr. Bieda, what makes this particular group of students stand out amongst their peers? Mr. Bieda: “My students often have to worry about things outside of their education such as food, money, transportation, and the challenges of their home lives – things that any middle school students shouldn’t have to worry about. [In spite of their circumstances] they face great challenges, yet they come to school and achieve great things [at  H L Harshman Middle School]. KTBA: What is the current state of the students’ environment? MB: “My students all come from low income families with 100% of students are on free and reduced lunch and are all bused to our school. Despite our extreme poverty we have some of the highest test scores in the city in both math and language arts. The band is there to help provide support to the students and give them a well rounded education. The success is because these students have a strong desire to further themselves and do great things with their lives.” KTBA: How will funds from Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation help these kids in a direct way? MB: “These donations will drastically change the course of the band. Currently we only have about 90 instruments for the 134 students in band to use, so the students already have to share instruments daily. Instruments are not made to be used several times a day and our instruments are breaking quickly! Muncie Music Center is going to repair our students instruments so that they work again!” On January 3rd, Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation took the opportunity to make a contribution to Mr. Bieda and his classrooms.  The money donated will help pay for dozens of music instruments to be repaired by Muncie Music Center in Muncie, Indiana. To donate to the next school, please visit our donation page to sow a seed in a child’s music education today!
