Well, by releasing a live album and film spotlighting a star-studded Christmas Jam concert. Warren Haynes Presents: The Benefit Concert Volume 16, out Dec. 13 via Evil Teen Records. Also, it features more than two hours of music from the Dec. 13, 2014 Christmas Jam benefit concert. Furthermore, it boasts Haynes, Gov’t Mule with Jackie Greene, Billy & The Kids (fronted Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead). Along with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and more.
Haynes on Christmas Jam
“I’m very proud that Christmas Jam has become a place where musicians feel comfortable taking risks on stage,” Haynes tells Billboard of the 31-year-old tradition. “It’s not often that a band has the opportunity to play their debut show in a sold-out arena in front of a fully engaged crowd, but Billy Kreutzmann has actually done it twice at Christmas Jam. First in 2005 with Serial Pod, his revered super-trio with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon of Phish; then again, here, with the debut of Billy & The Kids. I remember how excited Billy, Tom, Aron, and Reed were to hit the stage and finally share this project with the world. That energy is fully present in ‘Shakedown Street,’ the opening song of their set. It was a very special moment.”
Kreutzmann echoes Haynes’ sentiments. “That Christmas Jam was special for me, not only because it was our first show, but also because it was one of the last times, I got to play music with my dear friend Col. Bruce Hampton, darn it. We took the music to improvisational places we never could’ve rehearsed, and that immediate willingness to go far-out like that was just us responding to the fantastic energy of a sold-out arena, full of music fans who didn’t know what to expect from this band but who were just as excited as us to find out. There’s always been a certain magic surrounding Billy & the Kids shows, but this was, as they say, where it all began.”
About Christmas Jam

The Christmas Jam is one of the most celebrated and longest-running live concerts in the U.S. Furthermore, it’s held each year in Haynes’ hometown of Asheville, NC. Artists, volunteers and friends from all over the country come together to raise funds for the Asheville Habitat for Humanity.
For the 20th year in a row, proceeds from the Jam will go toward constructing energy-efficient new houses. As well as purchasing and developing land for entire Habitat subdivisions. To date, the Jam has raised over 2.3 million dollars for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity.
This year’s Christmas Jam House will be built in Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s newest neighborhood, Curry Court in Candler. This will become home to 12 families and will include both single family homes as well as townhomes.
Proceeds from past concerts were put toward the infrastructure and development of Curry Court, will fund the construction of the first house in that neighborhood (the 2018 Christmas Jam House) and will provide a challenge match grant on each of the 12 lots.
