The Shins – Photo of The Week

The Shins? Who are they? Well, they are a great band that forms in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1996. The ringleader is James Mercer and when their debut album releases in 2001, for some it is mind-blowing! Why? Because they manage to modernize the “Indie Rock” genre into a new direction!

Even with the numerous lineup changes, the band still trudges forward. With six albums under their belt, the band continues to push boundaries when it comes to indie rock and alternative music. Shortly after, they garner a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for 2008. This is why they are Photo of The Week!

This photo of James Mercer, the lead vocalist/guitarist and keyboardist Richard Swift is a capture of the American indie rock band ‘The Shins’ performing at Sound Academy in Toronto. Which also happens to be a sold -out Show where they’re covering their hits as well as newer material.

The band’s original lineup was Mercer (vocals, guitar), Sandoval (drums), Marty Crandall (keyboards) and Dave Hernandez (bass). Neil Langford replaced Hernandez in 1998. Hernandez returns to the band in 2003, as Langford left the band in 2001.

Hernandez remains in the band until 2009. Fruit Bats keyboardist Eric Johnson joins the band in 2006. While the musicians may come and go, the band still continues to be one of the many torch bearers of producing great indie music.
