Roky Erickson – Photo of the Week

Roky Erickson. While being one of true pioneers of the psychedelic rock genre. As well as a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators. It’s a complete surprise to get a chance to meet him in person. Hailing from Austin Texas, the band forms in 1965. Which is includes guitarist and vocalist Erickson, electric jug player Tommy Hall, and guitarist Stacy Sutherland. They’re popular during 1965 – 1969.

Furthermore, The Elevators were the first band to refer to their music as psychedelic rock, with the first-known use of the term appearing on their business card in January 1966. Their contemporary influence has been acknowledged by 1960s musicians such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and others.

A Chance Meeting

After spending a rather long day attending the SXSW music festival events, a friend and I decided to walk around downtown Austin to see what’s going on. After grabbing a bite to eat we came to this cool art gallery type place and decide to check it out. While it had some cool stuff, what catches my attention is the guy outside. He looks familiar and I’m trying to figure out who he is.

So, we go outside, and my friend recognizes him immediately and says Mr. Erickson it’s a pleasure to meet you! We each bought t-shirts and he did allow me to take a picture which is this week’s Photo of the Week. He was really nice to talk to and we both completely geeked out after meeting him. Needless to say meeting him was the cherry on the top of my trip to Austin. You just never know who you’re going to run into when you visit Austin Texas! This photo is captured in 2014.
