If you ever find yourself at a music festival, particularly one with jam bands, and Warren Haynes is on the bill, you will most likely catch him sitting in with someone for at least one song, but most hope for a few, including myself. The man knows how to serve the music, rather its adding some backup vocals, peppering in some tasty guitar licks, or doing an all-out sonic assault on those fragile little fleshy things on the side of your head.
Here, we have Mr. Haynes joining his protege’s band, The Marcus King Band, on stage at Haynes’ own Mountain Jam in 2016, for a searing cover of the Allman Brother classic, “Hot Lanta'”. We all know Warren can navigate through this number with ease, but it’s unbelievable how Marcus seemlessely melds his style into the melodies originally written by Dickey Betts that was birthed from a jam session in the early days of the Allmans. Marcus’ playing reminds me so much of his Jedi master Haynes, but at the same time his style is all his own, throwing in jazz-infused runs and lightning-fast blues licks that are executed with precision, but yet still retain a passionate, soul-full message. Keep an eye on this young apprentice and his talented band, as their ascent to the top is increasing in speed every day that goes by. Enjoy the video!
