Ok, two quick public service announcements. First, this post isn’t about blues, but still worth the read. Second, if you like R&B and soul music and haven’t checked out the Roots, stop reading and go listen to them right now. You may recognize them as the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. A great place to start is their 2010 album Wake Up! featuring the superbly talented soul singer John Legend.
The album features the typical Roots vibes with a very soulful Legend lending his craft to the high quality hip-hop jams. The album consists of mostly 60’s and 70’s soul covers and was mainly inspired by the historic 2008 United States presidential election of Barak Obama. The band aimed to tackle “social themes of awareness, engagement, and consciousness.”
Given the mass popularity of both the Roots and John Legend, it was no surprise that the album jumped to the upper tier of the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 60,000 copies in the first week alone. Wake Up! would also go on to win the 2011 Grammy award for best R&B Album of the year. Quality R&B music will never go out of style and is some of the most highly sought-after music there is.
