KTBA Donates Violins to High School Orchestra Program

MIDLAND, TX – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated three brand new violin outfits to the orchestra program at Midland Freshman High School.

“My school is a Title l school – meaning a high percentage of the students come from low-income families,” Ms. Porter explained. “There are two high schools in our town with a strong cross-town rivalry. The students thrive on the competition. My students have been playing their instruments for 3-7 years. They have already shown a commitment to learning to play their instruments. Just 7 years ago there were only 45 students in the program”, she adds. “Today we have over 175 students in the program.”

However, in recent years, the orchestra was on the verge of ruin.

How can a student succeed in orchestra if they don’t have an instrument of their own to play? Often we have students who are unable to purchase their own instrument. The school owns a few instruments that we can lend to students, but supplies are limited. Currently, I have students who do not have an instrument and have to share with someone else. I want everyone to be able to express themselves through music.

Orchestra is often a student’s safe place.

“It is a place where they can be themselves in a non-threatening environment. For some, it can be a place where they can escape from their home life and bad situations. Orchestra can also be a great benefit for students academically. Studies have shown a positive correlation between playing an instrument and academic success. Playing music teaches problem-solving skills, organizational skills, social skills, and leadership. These skills carry over to their core classes. All of these things lead our students to become more productive members of society.”

Thanks to the donations of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like you, Keeping the Blues Alive donated 3 violin outfits (includes a bow, rosin and other supplies).

Ms. Porter expresses her gratitude:

Dear Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation,

Thank you so much for your incredible donation. These instruments will have such an impact on the lives of my students. Not only they not have to share instruments but 3 lucky students will get to have something that’s new and pretty like their piers that can afford their own instruments instead of something that’s old and well used. They will feel so special and that is because of you!

With gratitude,

Ms. Porter
