KTBA Donates Guitars to Elementary Music Program

ODESSA, TX – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated a classroom set of guitars to students at Blackshear Magnet Elementary School!

“My students love to come to my Music class because I try to make the songs we sing, play and study, relevant to other subjects like math, reading, history, science and geography. They are amazed to learn about the patriotic songs from our curriculum and how they came down to us through time. Elementary students don’t get a lot of history in their core classes, so it ties in to Music very well.”

Blackshear Magnet Elementary is located in the southern and oldest part of town.

“It is economically disadvantaged,” Mr. Magers explains. “Half of my students are ESL kids. Every year, I always have a few students that are new to our school from Mexico. The rest of my students are either from the neighborhood or are bussed in from all over the county as we are a magnet school of around 670 students.”

Music has played an important role in their growth and development in spite of challenges.

“The majority of my students that ask me to teach them how to play the guitar, are not eligible to attend my after school Instrument classes. Only about 100 students in the magnet program may attend the extended day classes offered. The other 570 core students are excluded from that opportunity.”

The project in Odessa is aimed to have enough of the correct sized classroom instruments to teach a general music class of 25 students.

“Our upper grade students could utilize and expand their musical knowledge to learning and understanding the basic skills of guitar. Either a parent or student asks me at least once a day how they can get into my Guitar class. If I could introduce my project into the regular music class, I know they would be very happy.”

Thanks to the donations of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like you, KTBA afforded them the guitars they needed to boost enrollment and encourage the students already participating.

Mr. Magers expresses his gratitude:

Dear Donor,

I’m so excited and can hardly wait to tell them that our Grant got funded. THANK YOU so much for your generous donations and support for our young Musicians!

With gratitude,
Mr. Magers
