KTBA Donates Orff Instruments to Middle School Students

MARION, SD – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated two new mallet instruments to Marion School in South Dakota!

“Most of my students come from simple, rural backgrounds, but are hungry for creativity and experiencing the natural self-fulfillment and collaboration with others that comes from music,” Ms. Timmerman explains. Ms. Timmerman teaches music at the Marion School.

“More than a third of students qualify for free and reduced lunches, which makes quality school music programs that much more important. In the past few years the music classroom has deteriorated and there few resources for students to utilize. Students are eager to see that we as teachers and administrators care enough about the music program to invest in instruments and other resources.”

Repairing old instruments and purchasing new ones not only revives the morale of the students, but also the teachers and the parents.

Additionally, as the Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 academic school year approaches, teachers are taking inventory and preparing themselves for both new and returning students. By solidifying the instrumentation for the school year, teachers can shape their curriculum and repertoire to fit the needs of the growing classrooms they will service.

“Students from rural locations with low populations often do not get exposed to, nor have the opportunity to experience musical culture and the world of creativity music opens. Hands-on experience with Orff, world drumming and string instruments, for example, gives students musical opportunities they otherwise would not have had.

The addition of Orff instruments through funding from this project will help to give all students experience on class instruments.”

Since Ms. Timmerman’s mission aligns with our own, KTBA knew this was a project to move forward with.

Thanks to the donations of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like you, these students will now have the opportunity to practice pitched percussion on the new xylophones. They should arrive within the next few weeks!

Ms. Timmerman expresses her gratitude:

Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc.,

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our school’s music project! I am still in awe of people’s willingness to help further students education. Music is so often overlooked as a foundational part of a child’s growth. I am so happy that I’ll be able to further our students’ music education with the instruments you have purchased for them. Thanks again!

With gratitude,
Ms. Hofer Timmerman
