KTBA Donates Bass Strings to Middle School Orchestra

Norwood, OH – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation donated new bass strings to Norwood Middle School!

It had been 10 years since the music program had seen this kind of support.

“I teach the best students in the world,” proclaims Mrs. Marshall – the school orchestra director.  “We are an urban school with a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. The majority of our students hope to be the first in their families to attend college and are the first to play in an orchestra! All of my students have challenges to overcome; What makes my orchestra students special is the drive they all have to succeed.”

“Our school orchestra program has held on for 35 years, through times of adequate funding, years of NO funding and years of underfunding.”

The program has survived because of the dedication of our students and fundraising efforts. Many students are unable to rent or purchase their own instruments, so they rely on school instruments.

“We even have a student still using a school instrument while pursuing her dream to be a music teacher in college!” she adds. “These resilient students are successful largely because of their own drive and desire to succeed. I teach the best students in the world, because they are making the best out of their situations—regardless of obstacles they might face.”

Bass players are often the unsung heroes of the orchestra, they stand in the back, behind the flashy violins, mellow violas and the cool cellos, they have to carry instruments bigger than an average person, yet they are the critical foundation of every piece ever composed.

If the bass section is not on point, the rest of the orchestra falls apart. Their intonation is critical to a performance.

“Our basses [had] not had new strings in 12+ years. Our basses had been neglected due to funding and other pressing “instrumental emergencies”.  Our strings were so old that they had turned “false” meaning it was nearly impossible to accurately tune them – it was throwing off the entire orchestra.”

Thanks to the donations of Joe Bonamassa fans and music lovers like YOU, Mrs. Marshall can now re-string these basses and get the orchestra back in tune!

She expresses her gratitude:

Dear Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Inc.,

I just received notice that our project “All About Ours Basses” was funded! I cannot express my gratitude in this note. The bass players have been so neglected, with us just trying to do the minimum instrument repair and maintenance. I’m so excited to see what a positive impact this will have on the sound of my orchestra and morale of the group. Thank you so much!

With gratitude,
Mrs. Marshall

Every week, Keeping the Blues Alive makes a donation to a school in need of music supplies, instruments and more.
