KTBA and Casio Sponsor Elementary School Piano Lab
Grand Prairie, TX – Thanks to your donations, Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation and Casio have sponsored a piano lab at Starrett Elementary School.
Starrett Elementary School students come from very diverse backgrounds. They have families of all ethnicities, including African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, European, Caribbean, Asian and many more to name. The schools stands in a largely urban area – ten miles from the stadiums of two major sports franchises. Yet, the music program is not known for playing games.
“The majority of our students receive free or reduced meals here at school,” Ms. West explains. “We have many single-parent families. Many of our parents struggle to learn English. Time and resources are scarce for many of our families.”
Although their backgrounds are diverse, all students receive a great education from dedicated teachers and administrators on my campus. Now, they just need assistance to keep the music program afloat.
By incorporating new keyboards into the music program, more students will have frequent opportunities to learn the skill of playing the piano.
The current, although beaten keyboards, are used in a station activity where students rotate around and have 15 minutes over a 3-day period to go through a basic piano lesson via YouTube. However, with the addition of new keyboards, students will benefit from more practice time and theory lessons.
