Chuck Berry’s 60th Birthday Celebration

This week’s Blues Highlight of the Week is brought by yet another star studded event: this time it’s Chuck Berry’s 60th birthday, commemorated with two concerts that were filmed and used for the 1987 documentary Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The concerts featured performances from Linda Ronstadt, Etta James, and Julian Lennon, among others. The documentary also included interviews from sometime and frequent collaborators of Berry’s, like Bo Diddley, John Lennon (archival footage), and more. The backing band was also an enviable one, with names like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton on guitar. Richards, a longtime friend of Berry’s also produced the event and documentary.

Both concerts were held on October 16, 1986, at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis and fans were delighted with classics from Chuck Berry’s career like “Johnny B. Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and of course “Rock and Roll Music.” Enjoy this clip from the concert of “No Particular Place to Go.”
