James Cotton & Buddy Guy
James Cotton and Buddy Guy are honoring and celebrating their friend at “The Checkerboard Lounge” for Muddy Water’s funeral wake. Kirk West captures this picture because he was one of the few photographers invited to attend.
Because the Rolling Stones joined Muddy Waters on stage and performed together in 1981, the place gained a lot of popularity. Although Buddy Guy sold his interest in the club in 1985, it continues to flourish as a club for many more years until closing its doors in 2015.
About the Photographer:
Kirk West is a music lover who made a career out of music photography. West has never been able to get enough of the people, places, and things that comprise the life of a touring artist. In search of the richness that musicians and their music bring the world, his travels and life have taken him from his Iowa birthplace to far flung reaches of the globe, camera in hand.
In 1989 he served as the tour manager for the Allman Brothers Band for over 20 years. Check out his website to read more about other artists he has captured as a part of musical history. http://www.kirkwestphotography.com/
