What do you get when you combine a ripping rock guitarist from Israel with soul and blues loving sisters from Memphis? You get a hot young blues band with immense amounts of talent, sass, and passion. Southern Avenue is a collection of killer musicians from all over the globe with one goal in mind, to make blues a fun and enjoyable genre that makes you dance, groove, and tap your feet.
Ori Naftaly was born in Israel and played music from a very young age and quickly realized that his passion laid with the blues. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2013 to compete in the International Blues Challenge where he advanced to the Semi-Finals. He made the decision to stay in the United States because blues was thriving here more so than back home.
The decision paid off because he shortly met Memphis natives Tierinii and Tikyra Jackson. The sisters were not only incredibly talented but also brought a new and welcoming flare to the blues sound Naftaly was searching for. The band was officially founded in 2015 and a year later was signed to the famous Stax Records. In February of 2017, Southern Avenue released their debut, self-titled album which reached the number 6 spot on the Billboard Top Blues Album Chart and number one on the iTunes Blues Chart.
In a time where other genres are significantly more popular than the blues, bands need to discover a different flare to bring to their sound in order to stand out. Southern Avenues has definitely discovered that spark with lead singer and frontwoman Tierinii Jackson. She sings with great conviction and moves veraciously all across the stage and demands to be watched.
Now labeled as the “most talked about band in Memphis,” Southern Avenue is looking to redefine and lead the modern blues movement, and we are inclined to let them!
