Barenaked Ladies – College Rock

Barenaked Ladies Take Over Canada!

Barenaked Ladies – Coming together in 1988, they immediately have a cult following in Canada, with their self-titled 1991 cassette. Furthermore, it becomes the first independent release to be certified gold in Canada. As well as mainstream success in Canada with their release of Gordon. It takes off with the single “If I Had $1000000” with the follow-up “Brian Wilson”, releasing in 1992.

Success In The U.S.

While it takes a little longer for the U.S. to be embrace this band, they finally receive U.S. success. Beginning with versions of “Brian Wilson” and “The Old Apartment” off their 1996 live album. “Rock Spectacle” follows their 1998 fourth studio album “Stunt” which is ultimately their breakout success.

From Nerd Rock to Geniuses

The album Stunt features their highest-charting hit, “One Week” as well as “It’s All Been Done”. Their followup fifth album, Maroon also charts highly and features the lead single “Pinch Me”. In 2010,  the band became well-known for creating the theme song for the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory”. Kind of ironic that ‘One Week’ actually spent 1 week on the Billboard Hot 100.

Compilation Album & Winter Olympics

In 2001, they releases a compilation album, entitled Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits (1991–2001), referencing a line from their song “Box Set”. It contains 15 singles from previous BNL albums, two singles from other compilations, and two new tracks (including the single “Thanks, That Was Fun”).

After finishing a tour on December 31, 2001, to promote the compilation album, the band decided to mostly take a year off, only playing occasional shows such as the Medals Plaza at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City before returning to the studio in April 2003.

Departure of Page

On February 24, 2009, Barenaked Ladies and Steven Page separately announce that Page is leaving the band by “mutual agreement.” The remaining members continued as a quartet while Page pursues solo projects, including theatrical opportunities.

Going Forward To The Present

The band releases a second greatest-hits album, Hits from Yesterday & the Day Before. The band goes into the studio in February and March 2013 to work on a full album. Later released as Grinning Streak on June 4, 2013. Meanwhile in 2015, The band’s 11th studio album, Silverball, releases in June 2015. Two years later, Ladies and Gentlemen: Barenaked Ladies and The Persuasions releases in 2017 along with their 12th album Fake Nudes.

Canadian Music Hall of Fame

On March 25, 2018, the band is inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards in Vancouver. Which includes all the members and an introduction by Geddy Lee of Rush.

On January 17, 2020, the band announces the “Last Summer On Earth” 2020 tour, supported by “Gin Blossoms.” Along with “Toad the Wet Sprocket”. The tour starts June 3, 2020, in St. Augustine, Florida and ends on July 23, in Canada. Unfortunately, the prospects are now uncertain amidst the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.

In conjuncture with the tour announcement, the band also launches the “Barenaked Bytes” mobile app, where fans can gain access to ticket pre-sales, VIP packages, news, and discounts on merchandise.

Starting on March 29, 2020, the band began releasing a series of webcam based performances that they have dubbed #SelfieCamJam on their official Youtube channel in response to need for isolation during the pandemic.
