April 6 – April 12th. This week’s music birthdays are Warren Haynes, Billie Holiday, Mance Lipscomb, Shemekia Copeland, Guitar Junior, and Hound Dog Taylor! Check back next week!

Warren Haynes: 4/6/60

Singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer and is a member of The Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule.  As well as maintaining a solo career.  Early in his career he is a guitarist for David Allan Coe and The Dickey Betts Band. Haynes is known for his associations with the members of the Grateful Dead, including touring with Phil Lesh and Friends. In addition, Haynes founded and manages Evil Teen Records.

Billie Holiday: 4/7/15

One of the most celebrated vocalists of all time, this jazz and blues singer-songwriter’s emotional and heartfelt style “changed the art of American pop vocals forever”. Some of her best known songs include “God Bless the Child”, “Strange Fruit”, “Lady Day Sings the Blues”, “Don’t Explain” and “Good Morning Heartache”.

Mance Lipscomb: 4/9/1895

A wandering blues and folk musician who became an important figure of the 1960’s folk music revival and performed at the first Monterrey Folk Festival in 1963.

Shemekia Copeland: 4/10/79

Electric blues singer who began her career at age 16 by opening for her father, Johnny Copeland. She wins numerous Blues Music Awards. Recently christened as the new “Queen of the Blues” by the daughter of Chicago blues vocalist Koko Taylor.

Guitar Junior: 4/11/1939

Grammy Award winning Chicago blues guitarist and singer who performs with Magic Sam and Muddy Waters for a number of years before beginning his own solo career.

Hound Dog Taylor: 4/12/15

Chicago blues slide guitarist and singer whose debut album, Hound Dog Taylor and the House-rockers. He’s the first release of the independent blues label, Alligator Records. Furthermore, he’s known among guitar players for having six fingers on his left hand.
